WHY THE AWARD EXISTS

To keep good ideas
moving forward.

Joe’s innovations helped change the way people shopped. His son John continued the family’s involvement in the independent supermarket industry and celebrated his father’s contribution.

The award carries that spirit forward. It gives emerging executives from across retail and FMCG a chance to challenge their thinking, share their ideas and learn from the people leading the industry.

OUR TIMELINE

Fresh thinking.
A lasting legacy.

From ideas that changed the grocery aisle to the people shaping what comes next. This is how the Joe Berry story grew.

  1. A new country. A curious mind.

Born in England, Joe Berry arrived in Australia in 1919. His varied career would eventually lead him to Claude Fraser and Brisbane Cash & Carry (BCC), a business that became part of Woolworths’ growth in Australian grocery retail.

  2. Ideas that changed the everyday.

Joe travelled overseas to seek out fresh ideas. In the early 1950s, he helped introduce and trial supermarket trolleys. Open-front refrigeration, pre-packed produce and twist-ties were also part of his contribution to a changing industry.

  3. A legacy becomes an opportunity.

The Queensland Grocery Industry Association launched the Joe Berry Award. Its first winner, Woolworths buyer Bernie Brookes AM, wrote about Category Development. The award gave emerging executives a platform to share their ideas and broaden their retail knowledge.

Forty years after the first award, Henry Bush joined the roll of winners in 2026. The ambition continues: to recognise emerging talent, connect people with industry leaders and give bold ideas a place to be heard.
