"Being the inaugural winner of the Joe Berry Award was a great honour and provided a fantastic springboard to review overseas retailing and gather knowledge I have used many times in my career.
The Award was a fantastic opportunity to put into writing and present to my peers my thoughts on the industry.
Subsequent to winning the scholarship, I have had the opportunity to judge the award. This has given me the opportunity to meet a wide diversity of people from all different backgrounds. It is one of the most exciting days of the year when we sit down to judge each year's winner.
The quality of young executives, their ability to present and write has improved each year and the industry should be pleased that the Joe Berry Award has contributed to the overall standing of our industry and helped so many individuals in many different ways"
Bernie Brookes, CEO Myer Ltd
In the 1980s a group of like-minded grocery executives, at a meeting of the QGIA (Queensland Grocery Industry Association) decided that it was important to create a career path for young people in the industry. After much discussion, it was agreed that we would raise funds to create an annual bursary, enabling one outstanding young member of our industry to go on an overseas study tour, which would incorporate a visit to the FMI Conference in Chicago.
I was honoured when the committee members named this award after my father, the late Joe Berry. Since its inception, there have been many young men and women from the grocery industry sent on these study trips to broaden their outlook and to bring fresh ideas to the industry in Australia.
It is exciting to hear of the continuing support that the Joe Berry Memorial Award is receiving, and I congratulate the members of the ASMCA for their involvement.
My best wishes go to all those people who believe in the training and education of future generations in our great industry.
John Berry
